Dental veneers: disadvantages, how long they last and the real price

Dental veneers have disadvantages few clinics mention: irreversible trimming of 0.3–0.7 mm, a lifespan of 10–15 years in porcelain and 5–7 in composite, and a price in Spain of €400–800 per tooth against €248 (£213 / $287) in Tbilisi.

Una carilla de porcelana y una de composite sobre platos blancos

A porcelain veneer costs between €400 and €800 per tooth at a private clinic in Spain and lasts 10 to 15 years. What few clinics explain before taking the deposit is what you hand over in return: 0.3 to 0.7 mm of enamel that never grows back.

Dental veneers have four real disadvantages: enamel almost always has to be trimmed, they do not last for ever, composite veneers stain and last 5–7 years, and in Spain the price per tooth (€400–800 for porcelain) is multiplied by 8 or 10 in a “diseño de sonrisa”, the smile-design package sold by Spanish clinics. A review of 25 studies gives porcelain a 95.5 % survival rate at 10 years; composite, 88 %. In Tbilisi an E.max veneer costs €248 (£213 / $287), but the trip only pays off from 6–8 veneers upwards.

What are the disadvantages of dental veneers?

Dental veneers have disadvantages worth knowing before you sign: the enamel trimming is irreversible, they last 5 to 15 years depending on the material, they can break or come off, and once fitted you have to wear or replace them for the rest of your life.

The first weighs most: if a veneer breaks, it needs another veneer or, if the tooth has been weakened, a crown. The second is sensitivity to cold after trimming. The third is colour: a veneer cannot be whitened. The fourth is cost: over 30 years a person of 50 may need two or three sets.

How much of the tooth is trimmed for veneers?

For a porcelain or E.max veneer, 0.3 to 0.7 mm is trimmed from the front surface of the tooth; the most common figure is 0.5 mm. A direct composite veneer usually needs little or no trimming. A crown requires 1 to 2 mm on every surface, which is why it is a far more serious decision.

The classic reference recommends 0.5 mm within the enamel and warns that over-trimming exposes the dentine (British Dental Journal). And that matters: in a follow-up of 580 veneers, those bonded to dentine failed about 10 times more often than those bonded to enamel (Gurel et al., Int J Periodontics Restorative Dent, 2013). Ask whether the trimming will be done with a silicone guide or calibrated burs.

How long do dental veneers last?

Porcelain and E.max veneers last 10 to 15 years in most patients; composite veneers, 5 to 7 years. The best figure available comes from a review of 25 studies covering 6,500 porcelain veneers: estimated survival of 95.5 % at 10 years.

That review (Alenezi et al., Journal of Clinical Medicine, 2021) also says how they fail: fracture is the most frequent complication, followed by debonding, and lithium disilicate (E.max) performed better than feldspathic porcelain. For composite, a meta-analysis of 7 studies found 88 % survival with follow-ups of 24 to 97 months; the most repeated complaints were roughness and colour change (Lim et al., J Evid Based Dent Pract, 2023).

Composite or porcelain veneers?

Composite is cheaper (€100–400 per tooth in Spain), is done in one visit and needs almost no trimming, but it stains and lasts 5–7 years. Porcelain and E.max cost €400–800, require trimming and two visits, and last 10–15 years without changing colour. For one or two teeth, composite; for 6 or more, porcelain.

Type of veneer Trimming Lifespan Price in Spain (per tooth) Price in Tbilisi
Porcelain / E.max 0.3–0.7 mm in enamel 10–15 years (95.5 % at 10 years) €400–800 €248 (£213 / $287)
Direct composite 0–0.3 mm, often none 5–7 years (88 % at 2–8 years) €100–400 On request
No-prep (Lumineers and similar) None Good in the medium term in well-chosen cases; long-term data lacking €590–890 €248 if the case allows

Spanish prices: Dentaly.org, 23 April 2025 (porcelain €400–450, composite €100–150, Lumineers from €600), Clínica Palma Medicodental, Madrid, 12 January 2026, a private dental clinic in Madrid (composite €200–400, porcelain €400–800), and Clínica Dental Bernabeu, Madrid, 2026, another Madrid clinic (porcelain from €590, no-prep €590–890).

No-prep veneers: who are they for?

No-prep veneers suit small, gappy or slightly short teeth with healthy enamel and an acceptable colour. They do not suit very dark, crooked or protruding teeth: without trimming, material can only be added and the result looks bulky.

The scientific evidence is weaker than the advertising suggests. A systematic review found no valid controlled trial and regards them as a conservative treatment that demands careful case selection (Zarone et al., Journal of Osseointegration, 2018). A 2023 review saw good survival with minimal trimming, from few studies and short follow-ups (Cureus, 2023). “Lumineers” is a brand of thin veneer; in Spain it is advertised from €600.

Veneer or crown? And what “Turkey teeth” are

A veneer covers only the front surface and preserves most of the tooth; a crown surrounds it entirely and forces trimming of 1 to 2 mm on every surface. On a healthy tooth with good enamel, the veneer is almost always the right choice. A crown is justified when the tooth is broken, root-treated or heavily filled.

The so-called “Turkey teeth” are zirconia crowns on healthy teeth, often 20 units in a week, at €210–330 per unit. What is not mentioned is the price paid in tooth: a crown removes several times more structure than a veneer, and a share of those teeth end up needing root canal treatment. We do not plan crowns on healthy teeth to change their colour; Dr Ketevan Mamulashvili reviews every plan so that it is the least invasive one that solves the case.

How much do veneers cost in Spain?

Getting veneers in Spain costs €400 to €800 per tooth in porcelain or E.max and €100 to €400 in composite, depending on the clinic and the city. University clinics and some centres in Seville publish porcelain from €350–385; the cosmetic clinics of Madrid sit between €590 and €890.

Examples with names and dates. In Madrid, SaludOnNet, a Spanish medical booking platform, lists the porcelain veneer at €385 at the Clínica Odontológica de Postgrados Universitarios, a university postgraduate dental clinic, and at €559 at the Clínica Santa Elena, a private clinic (SaludOnNet, 2026). In Seville, the doctor-booking site Doctoralia shows €350 at the Clínica Montecarmelo and from €535 at Séptima Dental (Doctoralia, October 2026). In Barcelona, a specialist centre publishes composite at €130 and porcelain at €400 (Carillas Dentales Barcelona, 2026). A zirconia crown costs about the same, €400–600. The Seguridad Social, Spain’s public health service, covers none of this; dental insurance usually gives a discount rather than cover.

Smile design: what it is and what it really costs

“Diseño de sonrisa”, smile design, is the commercial name for a treatment of 8 to 10 veneers on the front teeth, preceded by photos, a scan and a trial in the mouth (mock-up). The price of a smile design in Spain runs from €3,200 to €8,000 in porcelain, plus €500–600 for the digital study if it is charged separately.

In Barcelona, 8–10 porcelain veneers are advertised at €3,200 to €4,000; in Madrid, with porcelain at €590–800 per unit, they come to €4,700 to €8,000. The digital study with mock-up costs €500–600 at a leading Madrid clinic (Clínica Ferrus & Bratos, 16 March 2026). With 16–20 teeth the bill rises to €8,000–16,000. For Tbilisi we budget a trip at about €1,300, the figure we use for three weeks; for veneers ten days are enough.

Smile design Spain (porcelain) Tbilisi (E.max, €248) Tbilisi with travel (~€1,300)
8 veneers €3,200–6,400 (typically €4,800) €1,984 (£1,704 / $2,296) about €3,300
10 veneers €4,000–8,000 (typically €6,000) €2,480 (£2,130 / $2,870) about €3,800
Digital study and mock-up €500–600 if charged separately Depends on the quote

With 4 veneers the trip does not pay off: €2,400 in Spain against about €2,300 in Tbilisi with flights and hotel. From 8 veneers upwards the saving is around €1,500–2,500.

Dental veneer reviews and how to read them

Reviews of dental veneers are almost always written the week they are fitted, when everything is new and white. The disadvantages appear between year 3 and year 10: an edge that stains, a veneer that comes off, a gum that recedes. Look for reviews with a date and with years of wear.

Three questions separate a useful review from a pretty photo: how many years the veneers have been in place, what material and how much trimming, and what happened when something failed. The review that tells how the clinic responded to a broken veneer is worth more than ten five-star ones.

How to look after veneers so they last

Veneers last longer with four habits: do not bite hard things with the front teeth, wear a night guard if you clench or grind, brush with a low-abrasion toothpaste and have the junction with the gum checked once a year.

The review of 6,500 veneers puts fracture as the first complication, and veneers without coverage of the incisal edge failed more than those that covered it, so design counts too. For composite, a professional polish every 12–18 months restores the shine.

When we do not recommend veneers

We do not recommend veneers when there is severe untreated bruxism, gums with active disease, little enamel left through wear or erosion, very crowded teeth that would require trimming into the dentine, or when the problem is one of position and is solved with orthodontics. In those cases the veneer fails early or costs a healthy tooth.

We also say no when the only reason is “I want whiter teeth” and the enamel is healthy: whitening costs a fraction and removes nothing. And when the sums do not add up: one or two veneers are better done close to home, where the dentist can adjust them without a flight in between.

E.max veneers in Tbilisi: €248 and what is included

In Tbilisi an E.max veneer costs €248 (£213 / $287), a fixed price in writing before you travel. The treatment takes about ten days: minimal trimming and temporaries in the first week, try-in and cementation in the second. A coordinator accompanies you to every appointment and the airport transfer is included.

We are a dental concierge service rather than a clinic, and we plan the case with partner clinics; see the full price list and the veneers and crowns page. The plan is reviewed by Dr Ketevan Mamulashvili, who assesses whether the trimming can stay within enamel and how many units are needed. The quote states whether the digital study, the temporaries and the check-ups are included.

Frequently asked questions

Do veneers ruin your teeth?

Porcelain veneers remove 0.3–0.7 mm of enamel, which does not come back; the tooth is not “ruined”, but it is committed to wearing a veneer for ever. The real damage comes when trimming reaches the dentine or crowns are placed on healthy teeth.

Can veneers be removed?

They can be taken off, but the tooth does not return to its original state if it was trimmed: it will need another veneer or a crown. Composite and no-prep veneers can be removed by polishing and leave the tooth almost as it was.

Do veneers hurt or cause sensitivity?

Trimming is done under local anaesthetic and does not hurt. In the following weeks you may notice sensitivity to cold, especially if the trimming came close to the dentine; it usually passes in one or two months. Pain on biting months later points to a problem with the fit or the nerve.

Do composite veneers stain?

Yes. Composite is a resin and absorbs coffee, tea, red wine and tobacco; in 2–3 years it loses its shine and in 5–7 it usually needs replacing. Porcelain and E.max do not stain, although the cement at the edge can darken over the years.

Does the Seguridad Social or dental insurance cover veneers?

No. The Seguridad Social covers extractions and emergencies, not veneers, crowns or dentures. Private dental insurance usually offers an agreed price or a discount rather than cover; some policies reimburse part of treatment abroad.

How many days do you need in Tbilisi for veneers?

About ten days. In the first week the study, the minimal trimming and the temporaries are done; in the second, the try-in and the cementation. There is a direct Madrid–Tbilisi flight with Wizz Air (about 5 h 15 min); from Barcelona, with one stop. Spanish citizens do not need a visa.

The short version

  • Porcelain and E.max veneers require trimming 0.3–0.7 mm of enamel, irreversibly, and last 10–15 years (95.5 % at 10 years); composite veneers last 5–7 years and stain.
  • In Spain a porcelain veneer costs €400–800 and a smile design of 8–10 veneers €3,200–8,000; the Seguridad Social covers none of this.
  • In Tbilisi an E.max veneer costs €248 (£213 / $287) with a fixed quote; the trip pays off from 6–8 veneers upwards, not with one or two.
